June 04, 1863, It was midnight rain and thick fog. And the Kuroshio was flowing like a fast river. The incident occurred near the port of current Mikurajima there. in the eary morning with the thick fog, the huge black ship suddenly appeared just below this village . It was the American ship named Viking..

When this black ship came, The villager of Mikurajima had already knew the news of Namamugi incident and they were talking that the foreign warship might come to Ogasawara islands, and occupy it to retaliate for this incident.

However, on this huge black ship ,they found the chinese they have seen in Yokohama. They tried to communicate each other with gesture and hand sign.After this,They understood this huge black ship is not warship but merchant ship .This ship was the way back to San Francisco from Hong Kong with 460 chinese workers .in those days American was Gold Rush. . In San Francisco for the mining operations, low-wage chinese workers were required.

but around the Mikura island is the toughest in the Pacific Ocean, so she were stranded in to Mikurajima.

All of villagers in Mikurajima,population is 250,rescued 460 Chinese passengers and 20 American sailors.
And they had only 60 houses, but they provided 30 houses to them.

Later, as for the ship, Dr. Takahashi's investigation showed that it was the ship of the New Bedford Massachusetts.
