I and my company colleage visited Yellow Knife, Canada in January of 2002. This was my second aurora viewing trip. We have selected the days closer to a New moon so that the sky is totally dark. But we could not control the weather. It was cloudy for almost every night and sky cleared only occasionally. During those clearings we were able to see aurora two nights out of three nights of stay. This time, aurora was dim and moved so fast that details of aurora were not captured on film. Reddish color on trees is due to red safety lamps placed on the grounds.

About Yellow Knife

Yellow Knife is situated about 1,000Km north of Edmongton, at latitude of 62 degrees north. It is the capital of Northwest Territoy, Canada.
Major industry of this city are gold and recently found diamonds.
When the first of the european visited here, they found the aboriginal people using golden (copper) knives. Hence they named the tribe "Yellow Knife" and it bacame city's name.

In summer, this area becomes lush with green and people come to enjoy summer sports, such as fishing and camping. I saw a large section of a sporting good store devoted for fishing goods. And there are countless number of lakes, large and small.

At the Visitor Center you can obtain the certificate for visiting the Arctic (above 60degrees north) for one dollar. (Click the image to enlarge my certificate)

To view aurora, you ride the bus which is operated by tour company to a camping site where heated room is available. After about two hours the bus will take you back to the hotel. During the stay you will see aurora if you are lucky.
The bus is actually a school bus, together with the use of a camping facility, they are making good use of resources which will be sitting idle otherwise.
