To us Japanese, Yokohama harbor area is associated with Japan's modernization
activities at the end of Edo era. Modern hotels were built. This was the
place where ambassadors coming from abroad set their first foot on Japanese
land. Many scholars started their journeys to the world from here. Trade
ships came and went, carrying goods such as silk and lackerware. Yokohama
was the gateway to the world. The warehouse area has been renovated recently into shopping centers and amusement centers. I went to this area to take pictures of Yokohama at night. (August 10, 2006) |
