Flower Hunting at Nikkoh (2005-6-26)

[Return]

Our friend invited us to Nikkoh to view "Primula japonica." A large population of the spices is being maintained at a private garden at the Chuzen-ji lakeside, the backyard of Nikkoh. The best part is that we can visit the garden free of charge.

The best timing is limited to within a week or so. Thanks to the advice of our resident friend, we arrived at a perfect day. How to get around

The garden is located at the lakeside of Lake Chuuzen-ji, which is visible at the far side of this picture.

Flowers on both sides of a small stream.

Majority of flowers are in pink.

The variation includes mixed color and ...

Primula Japonica

The flowers form several tiers of flower clusters, just like the ornamental tips of pagodas. Thus the Japanese name for it is "Nine tiered rings." They populate at wet, high-altitude places throughout most of Japan.

Another flowers at former annex of Italian Embassy

How to Get Around

The garden is located at the back of Lake Chuuzenji. The place is called Senjuga-hama. The access is limited to public transportation which includes environmentally safe "hybrid bus" and sightseeing boat. Both operate at frequencies of one or two times an hour. Either way, you start from near Kegon-no-Taki water fall. My recommendation is to use the boat. It is less likely that you would be left behind because of too many passengers, since it's capacity is something like 400 passengers.

If you would like to take bus, You can park your car at a parking lot near by the bus terminal. I recommend that you plan to arrive early and give plenty of time in case you would have to wait for another bus on return.
