原曲は、フランスのプラシード・カポー（Placide Cappeau, 1808-1877）作詞、アドルフ・シャルル・アダン（Adolphe Charles Adam, 1803-1856）作曲の “Minuit Chrétiens, or Cantique de Noël” (1847) です。カポーはプロヴァンス地方ロケモール（Roquemaure）のぶどう酒の仲買人で余暇に詩作をたしなんでいました。アダンはバレー曲の『ジゼル（Giselle, 1841）』などの作曲者としても知られています。いくつかの英語訳がつくられましたが、中でもアメリカの音楽批評家・編集者であったJohn Sullivan Dwight (1812-1893) による “O Holy Night” が有名です。これは正確な翻訳というよりは翻案です。「さやかに星はきらめき」は英語版からの訳詞です。フランス語原詩と英語歌詞（それぞれ１番）を紹介します。
